AKC Kennel Inspection Program
The AKC is the only purebred registry in the United States that has an ongoing routine kennel inspection program. The AKC kennel inspection program visits kennels to ensure the proper care & conditions of AKC-registered dogs & verify that breeders are maintaing accurate records for their dogs.
The field inspectors begin each kennel inspection by checking the dogs as well as the condition of thier environment are in good order. They also check the dogs for proper identification, microchip, tattoo or collar tag. After looking at the dogs they will review the breeders records. Breeders are expected to maintain records for at least 5 years.
If during a kennel inspection the field inspector finds minor deficiencies, the issues are noted and discussed with the breeder. Breeders that have kennels with major defiencies may lose AKC privileges (ability to register dogs or compete in events). In some cases fines will be imposed, AKC priveleges may be suspended and appropriate law enforcement authorities contacted.

DNA Testing
DNA testing may be conducted during inspections as a way to verify the parentage of a litter of puppies. Employing this technology confirms that breeders are maintaining accurate pedigrees and verifies the integrity of the AKC registry.
As part of the AKC's Frequently Used Sire Program (FUS), DNA tests are mandatory for dogs that sire 7 or more litters in a lifetime or more than 3 litters in a calendar year. On average, 45 percent of all AKC litters registered each year come from an FUS dog. The AKC has over 500,000 DNA profiles in its DNA Database.
