The English Bulldog is believed to have decended from Mastiffs, others believe that both Mastiffs & Bulldogs have a common ancester the Alaunt. The breed name Bulldog came from the fact that they were once used to gaurd, control & bait bulls. The English Bulldog was bred in the early thirteenth century for bull baiting & bear baiting. These dog sports were very popular in Britain in the 17th century. The way that they were built was for the sport of bullfighting, they had a short muzzle & a wide lower jaw which was needed for the English Bulldog to clamp themselve's to the bull's nose, their nose had to be upturned so that they could still breathe while clinging to the bull. A dog of great courage & agility was needed for the sport of bullbaiting. The English Bulldog as we know it now is nothing like the old fighting English Bulldog in regards to temperament.
In the days of bullbaiting it was believed that if a bull were to be slaughtered, then it should be baited first for more tender & nutrious meat. Because of this belief if a buthcher sold the meat of a bull that had not been baited he would recieve a penalty and the meat was considered unsuitable for consumption.
In 1802 a bill to bannish bull baiting was issued. Bull baiting continued until 1835 when the sport of dog fighting was outlawed in England and then English bulldogs were exported to America & Germany. The banning of dog fighting almost led to the extinction of the English Bulldog breed as they were no longer in demand. However, there were dedicated lovers of the Bulldog breed that felt very let down at the loss of so fine a breed, so they got together to preserve the breed & its good qualities. Scientific breeding brought good results, so within a few generations the English Bulldog became one of the finest physical specimens. Now the English Bulldog was regarded as a dog of which anyone could show with pride.
The English Bulldog breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1934 in the non-sporting group and today is a popular show dog throughout the world.
